Being competitive in a world of globalisation is a challenge for the embedded systems sector in Europe. Products must adapt to market needs that vary with geography, culture and the environment in which they are used. With high personnel costs, Europe must produce more systems per capita than the competition. With highly qualified personnel this can be achieved by using a high level of abstraction for modelling the systems and their variability. This will then in turn lead to fast and reliable production of highly configur-able and adaptable systems of high quality.

The MoSiS project will result both in more flexible and adaptable high quality products as well as the ability to produce products more cost-efficiently than today. The industry will also be able to produce in a reliable manner products with a higher level of complexity than what can be done today. Instrumental for achieving this overall objective are the following results which will be industrially vali-dated:

  • The standardized MoSiS language for modelling and management of variability.
  • Best-practice processes for model-driven development of MoSiS-systems.
  • Tool prototypes, mostly open source, which support the MoSiS language and the MoSiS processes.

The results are applicable to all parts of the embedded systems market, and can be used by all industry. The project has six work packages, as illustrated below.

The main innovations are:

  • a standardized language for variability mod-elling and management, supported by tools
  • model based approach to variability in extra-functional system properties
  • applicability of variability modelling and re-configurable architectures for runtime adapt-ability

Around 60-70% of software development in Europe takes place in the ‘secondary SW/IT industry’ (con-sumer electronics, energy, engineering, telecom, medical, transport …). For embedded systems it is crucial that Europe can continue to compete successfully at the global level, and MoSiS will give Europe a clear competitive advantage.

The consortium contains influential partners from the secondary SW/IT industry. They can push for wide acceptance of the project results, in order to ensure necessary market impact.
